When the Iowa based 801 Chophouse group came to Kansas City to open their first seafood restaurant, they turned to Klover Architects to develop their space. Klover Architects wanted to create an environment that spoke of the sea without being too literal.

The pendant light fixture’s glass shades appear to be air bubbles rising through water while a series of patinated copper shingles resemble fish scales. SSM was asked to develop a patina process that could create the look that Klover was after. SSM provided a half dozen different patina looks for the Architect & Owner to choose from.

Once the look was determined, then SSM created nearly 200 copper fish scales to clad the interior wall above the kitchen. SSM also carried the patinated copper to the exterior accent wall panels and on the reflectors for light shades that march across the building’s facade. A final element was the cladding of the Oyster Bar in zinc. Zinc is a timeless material that will develop a patina and age over time, growing warmer in appearance. SSM, working with the cabinet company, clad the bar top and created the signature bullnose elements in our shop. The completed unit, which measured about 6 feet wide x 20 feet long, was delivered and installed as one piece.
